Hunting Coyotes and other predators are for sure not just a simple walk in the park. And it’s very easy to underestimate the ones you hunt, and in the worst cases, you can become the prey. There are things that you need to do to ensure that you’re safe while hunting coyotes; stay downwind from coyotes, be quiet and still, ensure a safe distance, and have the right gear. And since coyotes commonly go out at night, seeing them from a long distance is nearly impossible. To help you with that, we are listing our top picks for the best thermal scopes on the market.

PROS:
  • Lightweight and affordable
  • Straightforward zeroing
  • Long battery life
  • HD and high refresh rate display
  • Great build quality
CONS:
  • Limited features
  • Doesn’t include mounting rings
  • Not the best for long-range hunting

Getting a thermal scope can be a pretty daunting investment due to its huge price tag. But don’t let that scare you away from getting your thermal scope, since there are gold nuggets like the ATN ThOR LT that only come at an affordable price.

The ATN ThOR LT is a part of the ATN ThOR thermal scope lineup, and the only thing you have to know right now about ThOR scopes is that they’re pricey. The ThOR LT on the other hand kept its price down by taking being as straightforward as possible by taking all the unnecessary features. For instance, the ThOR LT only has a 320×240 sensor, and if you want a cheaper one, you can get one with a 160×120 sensor.

In terms of performance, this scope has an internal battery that lasts up to 10 hours of use, which is perfect for overnight trips hunting coyotes. As for the zoom, you can get either a 3x-6x or 4x-8x model. And the thermal sensitivity is decent for the price as you can recognize targets at up to 700 yards. But upon testing, we can see tiny heat signatures from up to 2000 yards away, and at this point, the only limiting factor for you to hunt that far is the low-resolution sensor and not enough zoom.

Above the scope, you’ll find the very intuitive interface buttons, there are dedicated buttons for power, contrast adjustment, zoom, and color mode that switch between white hot or black hot palettes.

Overall, I would recommend this for farm defense and if you’re a beginner hunter just to get you started. It does lack features like video recording and a range finder to make it perfect for seasoned hunters.

PROS:
  • Tinted green display is easy on the eyes
  • Great sensor resolution
  • Wide 1.6x-6.4x magnification
  • Includes a wireless remote
CONS:
  • Fixed infinity focus
  • Uses disposable batteries, less battery time
  • Lower-resolution display than competitor

The Pulsar Core RXQ30V is another budget scope competing against the likes of the previously mentioned ATN ThOR LT. Compared to the ThOR LT, this Pulsar Core scope does pack similar performance, if not better for some applications.

The Pulsar Core RXQ30V packs a good sensor resolution which comes in at 384×288 which is great for its price point. Although despite having a larger sensor resolution than the ATN ThOR LT, this has a green-tinted AMOLED screen with a lower resolution of 480p with a 50Hz refresh rate.

This scope has a magnification of 1.6x-6.4x which is perfect for the thermal sensor size. The 6.4x magnification is also perfect for the maximum detecting range of around 985 yards. And unlike other scopes, you also have variable magnification to get the perfect field of view for any situation. Another great feature this scope has is the included wireless remote control which can be useful especially if you’re putting your gun into a tripod setup.

And now here comes the negative features; it uses 2 disposable CR123A batteries, and that directly translates into 4 hours of battery use. And it’s not that ideal especially if you compare it to the battery of the ATN ThOR LT which not only has an internal battery but also lasts up to 10 hours. But a decent solution to that is the battery packs and external power adapter sold by Pulsar Core

Now, here we are with the ATN ThOR 4. It’s the flagship of the ATN ThOR lineup.  It’s the bigger and beefier brother of the budget ATN ThOR LT, and I assure you from the start that the complaints you might’ve had with the ThOR LT don’t exist here with the ThOR 4.

This scope is well equipped with ATNs ultra-sensitive Gen 4 sensor which has a resolution of 480p. The sensor works with the HD 720 display on the scope, and together, it brings crisp and detailed images even at long ranges.

The scope has a digital zoom of up to 6x, but that’s not what we’re after. You can get the scope itself with 4 different magnification ranges: 1-10x, 1.5-15x, 2.5-25x, and 4-40x. All models have a maximum detecting distance of almost 2000 yards, but I’m sure that it can still detect heat way past 2000 yards.

Now, let’s discuss all the bells and whistles that this scope has. First, you can take videos and pictures on this scope, and it does save on a microSD card, and you can choose to activate the video every time the scope detects recoil. Secondly, this scope has a built-in rangefinder helping you get the perfect shots. And you can control every feature with a mobile app that connects to your scope via Wi-Fi.

Lastly. This has a large internal battery that makes the scope last up to 16 hours on a single charge. And overall, I’d recommend this for any application you might have, and of course, this is also best for Coyote Hunting.

Now with our last scope, the Trijicon REAP-IR. This scope is one of the most famous ones for having the best picture quality on the scope, despite having the same 640×480 sensor resolution as other competing thermal scopes.

Let me tell you right away that there are not many fancy bells and whistles on this scope despite being one of the most expensive ones. You’re paying for sheer reliability and amazing picture quality. And you’re paying for a quality that “just works” every time.

One of the best features of this scope is the Edge Detect Mode which outlines everything that it sees to make it more recognizable in an instant. It also has Stadiametric Ranging so you can instantly know how far your target is. While the interface on this scope is very easy to control with the Thumbstick. This scope has a fixed magnification at 1.5x, and to compensate, it has up to 12x digital zoom, which doesn’t cut too much resolution.

Overall, there isn’t much more to say about this scope, and while it doesn’t have a large battery, Wi-FI, or video functions. It still is one of the most preferred scopes by professionals due to its sheer quality and reliability.
