In the firearms world, there are a few acronyms that are thrown around constantly. You might hear people talking about M4s and AR-15s, but what do those acronyms actually stand for? In this blog post, we will be discussing one of the most popular firearm manufacturers in the United States: CMMG. We will be defining what CMMG stands for, as well as some of their most popular products. Stay tuned!

What Does CMMG Stand For?

CMMG is an abbreviation for Central Missouri Manufacturing Group. The company was founded in 2002 by Chris Miller and Mark Gorham. CMMG is headquartered in Columbia, Missouri, and specializes in the production of AR-15s and other firearms components.

The company has a wide variety of products that are popular among shooters nationwide. Some of their most popular items include:

  • AR-15 rifles
  • Rifles chambered in .22LR
  • Pistol caliber carbines
  • Bolt action rifles
  • Suppressors

As you can see, CMMG offers something for everyone! Whether you’re looking for an AR-15 to do some target shooting, or a bolt action rifle for hunting, CMMG has you covered.

What is a CMMG rifle?

CMMG is a firearms manufacturing company that was started in 2002 by Jeff Overstreet, John Thomas and John’s son Pat Thomas. Â The initial goal of the company was to provide high-quality AR style rifles at an affordable price point for shooters. In recent years, CMMG has expanded their product line to include AK style rifles as well as bolt action hunting rifles chambered in big bore calibers such as .458 SOCOM and .338 Federal. Their new Mk47 Mutant rifle can fire both standard AK magazines and AR-15 magazines interchangeably with no modifications needed!

Over the past decade and a half, CMMG has produced some of our favorite AR style rifles. Some of these include:

  • The Mk47 Mutant Rifle (discussed in more detail below), which is an AK/AR hybrid chambered for the .308 Winchester round using standard AR-15 magazines that can also be converted to use both standard AK magazines as well as proprietary polymer Magpul AK PMAGs by switching out a few simple parts on the lower receiver; it’s one rifle with two magazine types!
  • The MUTANT line of pistols, which are based off their innovative MUTANT rifle design but in a pistol configuration, also chambered for either the .308 Winchester or the smaller AR-15 cartridge chamberings; these are great for home defense or truck guns because they don’t require any paperwork like an SBR would need.
  • The MkW ANVIL rifle (discussed further below), which has all of the same features and benefits as their other rifles but with added compatibility to run both standard AK magazines as well as proprietary polymer Magpul PMAGs without needing special parts on your lower receiver; this is perfect if you want one gun that can do everything from plinking at cans up close range with shorter rounds to hunting big game animals out past 200 yards!

The Mk47 Mutant Rifle

The Mk47 Mutant Rifle is CMMG’s first AK-pattern rifle. It was designed as a solution to the problem of feeding both intermediate and full power cartridges from standard AK magazines. The Mk47 Mutant is a gas piston operated, semi-automatic rifle that accepts both NATO and AK-type magazines. It features an ambidextrous safety selector, bolt hold open release, and magazine release. The Mk47 Mutant also has a built in red dot sight mounting system that does not require removal of the front handguard.

The Mk47 was designed to provide the best of both worlds for those who want the reliability of an AK with the ability to use modern optics. This makes it ideal for home defense, competition shooting, or just about any other application where you need quick target acquisition and accuracy out to 300 yards.

The Mk47 Mutant is available in two different calibers: .223 Remington and .308 Winchester. Both of these cartridges are commonly used by law enforcement, military personnel and hunters around the world. The rifle will also accept any standard AK-type magazine that holds 30 rounds or less. This makes it extremely versatile for shooters who want more options than just one type of ammunition.

Mk47s are currently outfitted with an Aimpoint Micro T-l red dot sight so you don’t have to worry about having access to a secondary optic mount on your weapon. They also feature a downward ejection port cover that protects against dust/dirt getting inside when firing from prone positions like lying down at night or kneeling.

If you’re looking for a rifle that is both reliable and versatile, the Mk47 Mutant should definitely be at the top of your list. It’s perfect for shooters who want to have one weapon that can do it all.

The MUTANT pistols

The MUTANT pistols are a series of CMMG firearms designed to be the ultimate in modularity and ergonomics. The MUTANT line includes four pistols: the BANSHEE, PISTOL, DEFENDER, and RECON. Each pistol is available in multiple calibers and configurations to allow for maximum versatility.

  • The BANSHEE is the smallest and lightest of the MUTANT pistols, weighing just over 12 ounces unloaded. It’s also the most compact with a barrel length of just under three inches. The BANSHEE is chambered in .22LR, .380 ACP, or .40 S&W and comes standard with a threaded barrel. There are four different configurations available: the BANSHEE SBR, BANSHEE 100, BANSHEE 200 and the BANSHEE 300.
  • The PISTOL is slightly larger than the BANSHEE with a barrel length of five inches, but it shares many of the same features. The PISTOL has an overall length of just over eight inches from tip to tail and comes standard with a threaded barrel. It’s chambered in .22LR, .223 Rem/556 NATO or .300 BLK depending on which configuration you pick up from your local dealer. Like its smaller sibling, there are four configurations available: PISTOL SBR (Short Barrel Rifle), PISTOL 100, PISTOL 200 and the PISTOL 300.
  • The DEFENDER is a pistol that’s unique to the MUTANT line of firearms. It shares many of the same features as its smaller siblings but with some changes that set it apart from other CMMG firearms: The pistol has an overall length of just over seven inches from tip to tail and comes standard with a threaded barrel. It’s chambered in .22LR or .223 Rem/556 NATO depending on which configuration you pick up from your local dealer. Like its smaller sibling, there are two configurations available: DEFENDER SBR (Short Barrel Rifle) and DEFENDER 100 (with an extra long barrel).
  • The RECON is the largest of the MUTANT pistols, but it’s also one that can serve as a primary weapon with its longer barrel length and heavier weight. The pistol has an overall length of just over nine inches from tip to tail and comes standard with a threaded barrel. It’s chambered in .22LR or .223 Rem/556 NATO depending on which configuration you pick up from your local dealer. There are three configurations available: RECON SBR (Short Barrel Rifle), RECON 100 and the RECON 200 (with an extra long barrel).

The MkW ANVIL rifle?

CMMG is known best for their MkW ANVIL rifle, a lightweight AR-15 platform chambered in .458 SOCOM. The guns’ name pays homage to the United States Army’s first use of this round during Project Anvil, but CMMG has taken it a step further with the addition of their patented Radial Delayed Blowback operating system.

This unique design makes it possible to handle high recoil loads without adding unnecessary weight or length. In fact, the ANVIL series includes three distinct options: full size rifles with 16″ or 18″ barrels, and pistol versions featuring 12″ barrels all offered either black or flat dark earth finishes making these versatile firearms suitable for any mission!

If you’re looking for a lightweight rifle that can handle the big kids’ toys, be sure to check out CMMG’s MkW ANVIL. You won’t regret it!
